Aviation Safety Questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Aviation Safety Questions - Essay Example Of course the responsibility lies with the air carrier to safeguard their customers, their employees and provide them proper working environment in every possible way, but it is in their best interest as well so to say, as regards to business point of view, because statistics have shown that an aircraft accidentsââ¬â¢ true cost in claims, lost employee time or use, and lost customers is 4 times the actual cost of the accident. For example, US Air estimates that the Pittsburgh accidentââ¬â¢s actual cost was 30 to 40 Million dollars. This means that the accidents true cost is somewhere around 140 Million dollars. The FA act charges the FAA with the responsibility for promulgating and enforcing adequate standards and regulations (Alexander & Clarence, 2004). The main focal point of any Air Carrier Safety Program is the Safety Officer. Sometimes those that see the best are those that are not as close to the situation. To ensure safety, an outsider like safety officer is a very practical solution. FSDOs nationwide handle the dual function of safety inspection and advice for airline. Local FSDOs conducts several types of inspections on each airlineââ¬â¢s maintenance and operations functions. If a certificate holder fails to comply, section 609 of the FA act specifies that the FAA may reexamine any certificate holder or appliance. Inspectors periodically conduct maintenance base inspections which focus on the record kept by an airline like airworthiness directives compliance, and conduct shop inspections to observe maintenance procedures and carry out ramp inspections to observe the airworthiness of the aircraft. A similar operations base inspection focuses on records concerning the hours of training and check rides given pilots and the rest periods between duty shifts given crews as required by regulations. En route inspections involve inspections of

I Corinthians Essay Example for Free
I Corinthians Essay Epistles to the Corinthians, is the letters written by Saint Paul to the Christian church at Corinth, Greece. It forms the seventh book of the New Testament. In I Corinthians, probably written 54 A. D. , Paul rebukes the Corinthians for their quarreling and wicked behavior. He also discusses various points of Christian doctrine with emphasis on the resurrection of the dead and the power of love. In addition, he explains doctrinal issues, encourages unity among the believers, defends his right to be considered an apostle, warns against the teachings of false apostles, and asks the Corinthians to give money to support the struggling church in Jerusalem. II Corinthians Epistles to the Corinthians, is the letters written by Saint Paul to the Christian church at Corinth, Greece. It forms the eighth book of the New Testament. II Corinthians appears to have been written about a year later. In the first part, Paul defends himself against accusations of insincerity and denounces those who question his authority. He explains doctrinal issues, encourages unity among the believers, defends his right to be considered an apostle, warns against the teachings of false apostles, and asks the Corinthians to give money to support the struggling church in Jerusalem. In the second part, generally considered to be a later letter, Paul expresses joy at the reconciliation of the Corinthians with the church. Galatians A letter of Saint Paul forming a book of the New Testament. Paul wrote the letter to his churches in Galatia province, central Asia Minor. Most of the Galatian converts were gentiles, and Paul had accepted them as Christians without asking them to obey the Jewish Law. But Jewish Christians challenged Paulââ¬â¢s authority as an apostle and taught all converts must follow the Mosaic Law. In answer, Paul wrote here that he had been set apart by a revelation of Jesus Christ, and that the righteous are justified, or saved, by faith in Christ. In the letter Paul also gave interesting details about his life and ministry. This letter is addressed to unnamed churches in a region of Central Asia Minor called Galatia. Init Paul asserts that he is a true apostle of Christ, that he received his message directly from Jesus Christ, and that the church leaders in Jerusalem, including Peter agreed that Paul should take the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles. Paul discusses the importance of faith and the wonderful freedom that people receive when they put their trust in Christ. Ephesians Ephesians is the 10th book of the New Testament. The book is a letter written by Saint Paul. The Bible presents it as being addressed to the Christian church in Ephesus, Asia Minor, but Biblical scholars believe it was a circular letter intended for a number of churches. Apparently Paul wrote the letter about 60 A. D while he was in prison in Rome. He declared that Godââ¬â¢s purpose is to unite all things in Christ. The church is described as the mystical body of Christ. This short book summarizes many of the teachings found in the letters of Paul. A string emphasis is placed on the unity that Christians have because of the sacrifice Christ made for all and because of the new life Godââ¬â¢s Spirit gives them. Philippians Epistle to the Philippians in the Bible is a letter of Saint Paul to the church in Philippi, Macedonia. Paul wrote from prison, probably in Rome, to the first church he founded in Europe. He thanked the Philippians for a gift, expressed his own joy during his persecution, told of his successful preaching while in captivity, and appealed to them to complete his joy by living in a way ââ¬Å"worthy of the Gospel of Christ. â⬠In this letter, he expresses his affection for the Christians at the church in Philippi, a city in Macedonia, and encourages them to remain faithful to Christ and to rejoice in God, no matter what circumstances arise. Colossians Epistle to the Colossians is the 12th book of the New Testament. It is a letter written by Saint Paul from prison in Rome about 60 A. D. In it Paul warns the people of Colossae, a city in Asia Minor, against heresy and paganism. Paul explained the nature of Christ and His teachings. He also explained the rules and ethics of a Christian household, asserting that wives should be subject to their husbands and slaves should obey their master (3: 18- 4:1). In this letter, written to a Gentile church in Asia Minor, challenges the Christians there to avoid the false teachings of a group of people who were encouraging them to give up certain physical desires and to worship angels and spiritual powers. Instead, they are to set their hearts on Christ who is enthroned in heaven.

My Amazing Grandfather (Grandpa) :: Personal Narrative Profile Essays
Personal Narrative- My Amazing Grandpa I don't have a lot of fantastic memories of childhood. There were no spectacular family adventures, no unique family projects that taught some sort of moral lesson, no out-of-the-ordinary holidays. We ate family meals together, but most of the time the children and adults lived in different worlds. The kids went to school, did homework, and played; the adults worked. I was lucky, though. When I wanted a little of both worlds, I could always turn to Grandpa. I remember vividly the weekends at his house. Sitting on his lap, going to wrestling matches, walking down the street or through a park--these were things I did with Grandpa. I wasn't just a kid to him: I was his granddaughter, and I was special. He was special too. Grandpa was a giant of a man. He stood six feet two inches and weighed over 250 pounds. He moved with purpose and carried himself with respect. Tom was a proud man, a good man, and all who knew him said so. Even if you didn't know him, you would notice his inner strength, his patience, his self-esteem. Grandpa wasn't a scholar. In fact, he didn't even make it through grade school. He was born at the turn of the century, and educating black men wasn't a necessity then. He went to work when he was sixteen, and for the next forty years he worked in a coal factory. Then he worked in a steel mill for another twenty years. He stopped working only because the steel mill closed and he was too old to find another job. When I was with Grandpa, I could be a child and yet see things through grown-up eyes. "You see that tree, Cookie," he would say. "That tree was here before those houses. God put that tree there; man put the houses. Which is more beautiful?" If I climbed a tree, he didn't say, "Get down." He said, "Climb it right so you won't fall." "You appreciate what you work for," he used to say. He taught that lesson well. He never let me win any game; he taught me to win by learning to lose.

Analysis of ââ¬ÂGood Peopleââ¬Â by David Foster Wallace Essay
Analysis of â⬠Good Peopleâ⬠by David Foster Wallace, 2007 The short story is set at a park by a lake. ââ¬Å"They were up on a picnic table at that park by the lake, by the edge of the lake, with part of a downed tree in the shallows half hidden by the bank.â⬠The downed tree sets the mood to be sad and dark. We also learn that the main characters Lane A. Dean, Jr. and his girlfriend Sheri Fisher are sitting very still on the picnic table, which tells us that the atmosphere is quite intense. It does not say for how long they sit by the lake, but it says that the right sides of their faces get shaded so it can be assumed that they sit there for a while. One of the main characters is Lane A. Dean, Jr., who is 19 years old and studies accounting and business. Lane is a very reflective person because he reflects a lot on how he is and how he thinks he should be. ââ¬Å"He knew it was wrong, knew something was required of him that was not this terrible frozen care and cauti on, but he pretended to himself he did not know what it was that was required.â⬠This shows that he is a conscientious person and that he has high expectations for himself. Through the whole short story thoughts like the mentioned quote are seen. It seems like Lane is not satisfied with the way he is and keeps comparing himself to his girlfriend, Sheri. ââ¬Å"He was starting to believe that he might not be serious in his faith. He was desperate to be good people, to still be able to feel he was good.â⬠The fact that he is moving away from his faith makes him question whether he is a good person or not. It makes him confused about his identity, about who he is. Lane is also confused when it comes to his love for his girlfriend and that could be the reason why they are not happy sitting together. Laneââ¬â¢s girlfriend, Sheri, is 20 years old, studies to become a nurse and has a hosting job. She is very serious in her faith and values and she is a girl who knows what she wants. So Sheri seems more secure than Lane and more comfortable in her own skin. In a way Sheri is more mature. But she also sits very still: ââ¬Å"She was blank and hidden.â⬠It is shown that Sheri is not happy because she sits with her face in her hands. So it can be concluded that they may have a problem with each other. It is a third person narrative. The narrator has an obvious focus on Lane and this we see because the narrator only includes Laneââ¬â¢s thoughts and feelings a lot: ââ¬Å"Sometimes when alone and thinking or struggling to turn matter over to Jesus Christ in prayer, he would find himself (â⬠¦)â⬠ââ¬Å"He could almostà visualize himself tiptoeing past something explosive.â⬠Therefore the narrator has an inner view of Lane. We learn his opinions, and especially when Sheri is described ââ¬â you learn that it is through Lane that she is described. The effect of the inner view is that we only learn how one of the main characters is feeling and is thinking. It also makes the information about Sheri subjective because it is Laneââ¬â¢s opinion about her and not her exact thoughts or feelings. We only have Laneââ¬â¢s opinion and actions and Sheriââ¬â¢s actions. Furthermore the short story is written in the past tense, and there are some flashbacks: ââ¬Å"Two days before (â⬠¦)â⬠Some times when they had prayed (â⬠¦)â⬠The flashbacks can enlighten the reader about the main characters background, but also confuse the reader. The short story consists of both short sentences and long sentences. The sentences are short when something dramatic happens and the short sentences make it more dramatic and interesting to read and it also speeds up the reading pace. For example when Lane describes the battle within himself: ââ¬Å"Two hearted, a hypocrite to yourself either way.â⬠There is no direct speech, which makes it harder for the reader to interpret the characters because the writer influences the readers. The writer is presenting an interpretation of the charactersââ¬â¢ speech and not their exact words. There is a focus on actions so there is a lot of verbs and also adjectives, especially in the beginning. There are some difficult words, but all in all the vocabulary is standard level. The main conflict is the conflict between Lane and Sheri. First of all both of them sit very still and we hear a lot of Laneââ¬â¢s thoughts ââ¬â as if they are not talking to each other. ââ¬Å"It was of two great and terrible armies within himself, opposed and facing each other, silent. There would be battle but no victor.â⬠The battle inside of Lane could represent the battle between Sheri and him. You might say that they have a probl em when it comes to communicating with each other. The conflict is that Lane does not love Sheri. ââ¬Å"(â⬠¦) at the decision together did not ever include it ââ¬â the word ââ¬â for had he once said it, avowed that he did love her, loved Sheri Fisher, then it all would have been transformed.â⬠18 ââ¬Å"But neither did he ever open up and tell her straight out he did not love her.â⬠Lane expresses that if he had loved her or said to her that he loved her, they would not have this conflict. The conflict is that Lane is not honest with Sheri about his true feelings and this leads to the unhappy and tense atmosphere. The reason whyà Sheri does not say anything could be because she is waiting for Lane to come clean and be honest. At the ending of the story Lane imagines what he wants Sheri to say when he tells her the truth ââ¬â that he does not love her. Lane wants Sheri to say that it is all right and that she wants the best for him. Lane has been praying for love and at the end he comes to realize that he h as been praying for the wrong thing. He should have been praying for courage ââ¬â courage to tell Sheri the truth. The title ââ¬Å"Good Peopleâ⬠refers to the fact that Lane wants to be a good person by being honest with Sheri. It also refers to when Lane says that he is not that serious in his faith and that he wants to be good people, to feel that he was good. Lane does not want to lie to her or to himself. To be good is something every human being aspires to be. To be good, kind and loving to your family, friends and neighbours is something preached by the Christian church, but it is also how people generally want to be in spite of their religion. Lane finds out at the very end that he is not that serious in his faith, but that he is still able to be good by finding the courage to be honest with Sheri.

Earthquake resistance design
Columns can sustain two types of Damage, namely axial- flexural (or combined compression bending) Failure and shear failure. Shear damage is brittle and must be avoided in columns as by providing transverse ties at close spacing which carry the horizontal shear forces and hold concrete and vertical bars together. Horizontal Bands and its Role: Horizontal bands are the most important Earthquake-resistant feature in masonry buildings, since it holds a masonry building as a Single unit by tying all the walls together. There are four types of bands in a typical Masonry building, namely gable band, roof band, lintel band and plinth band. Lintel band is the most Important of all, since it ties the walls together and also breaks the monotonous continuity of wall. The gable band is employed only in Buildings with pitched or sloped roofs. In buildings with flat R. C or reinforced brick roofs, the Roof band is not required. In buildings with pitched r sloped roof, the Roof band is very importan t. Plinth bands are primarily used where uneven settlement of foundation in soil undergoes bending and pulling actions. It will be better to use ARC bands Shear Wall: Reinforced concrete buildings often have vertical plate-like ARC walls called Shear Walls. These walls generally start at foundation level and are contain souse throughout the building height. Their thickness varies from mm to mm. Shear walls are usually provided along both length and width of buildings.Shear Core Shear walls are like vertically-oriented wide beams that carry earthquake odds downwards to the foundation. Just like reinforced concrete (ARC) beams and columns, ARC 6 shear walls also perform much better if designed to be ductile.. Shear walls, if provide around the elevator core or stair well is known as shear core. Boundary Elements: Under the large overturning effects caused by horizontal earthquake forces, edges of shear walls experience high compressive and tensile stresses. To ensure that shear walls behave in a ductile way, concrete in the wall end regions must be reinforced in a special manner to sustain these load reversals without loosing strength.End regions of a wall with increased infotainment are called boundary elements which have high bending strength. Boundary Elements (Design, Location) Short and Long Columns: During past earthquakes, reinforced concrete (ARC) frame buildings that have columns of different heights within one storey, suffered more damage in the shorter columns as compared to taller columns in the same storey. Short Column Behavior: Poor behavior of short columns is due to the fact that in an earthquake, a tall column and a short column of same cross-section move horizontally by same amount. However, the short column is stiffer as compared to the tall column, ND it attracts larger earthquake force. Therefore it cause X-shaped cracks.Short Column (Failure, Location with Mezzanine floor) Stiffness of a column means resistance to deformation -? the larger is the stiffness, larger is the force required to deform it. This behavior is called Short Column Effect. Design Phenomenon: 7 If it is not possible to avoid short columns, this effect must be addressed in structural design. As per Indian Standard the reinforcement must extend beyond the short column into the columns vertically above. In case of stone or brick masonry the width has to be increased accordingly for short column. BEAM COLUMN JOINT: The points where the beams and columns intersect is a beam column joint. Since they too made of same material we can't expect to have more strength. So have to take care on these unavoidable joints.During earthquake the upper bars and lower bars act in a different direction causing elongation or damage of joint. Design Strategy: In design practice large column size, having large closed loops are placed inside. These should follow some design specification. Normally we will go for the anchoring of the bars at the ends. Micro concreting can b e gone in the congested junction. Beam Column Joint (Location, Failure without proper anchorage) Hidden Beams: These are also called as concealed beams which have their depth equal to that of the slab. These can be provided either on longer or on the shorter span. When provided along longer span it is found that the load carrying capacity increase to 135% with an economical increase of just 0. 4 -? 0. 5%.These beams are designed for negative bending moment which is caused due to load reversal expected during earthquake. 8 Hidden Beam Plastic Hinge: As moment increases, the linear stress distribution form persists and the extreme fiber stress reaches the yield stress value. Further increase in the bending moment cannot produce any increased fiber-stress but causes yield to spread into the inner fibers. As the bending moment Increases more and more fibers reach the yield stress until the final state, the whole of the section will yield. The complete yielding across the section of a be am is termed as plastic hinge. The section now carries the maximum bending moment without strain hardening taking place. The beam can carry no further load.Any further load will only result in increased deflection. The beam will behave as if t is hinged at the plastic section and a condition of collapse has been reached. Reduced Beam Section: This is a section of beam which is provided along the length of steel beams. These will have their area of cross section lesser than the proceeding section to an extent that it will just act as a plastic hinge. In case of steel section also a circular arc will be cut in the required flange portion of span. Reduced Beam Section Pre tensioning Technique: In case Of domes and shell Structures, the lateral thrust experienced will be more. This fault is answered well by pre tensioned concrete. In case of huge trustees like nuclear 9 rectors, large spanning domes we will be having a thin walled cylindrical tube of diameter about 10 to 15 CM and steel rods will be packed tightly. Pre tension elements (After & Before Concreting) Then stressing will be done as per design and then the micro concrete is injected in pressure into the tube. This setup is then done with normal concreting. It will resist the lateral thrust in an effective manner. Techniques to Adopt on Sky Scrappers: While speaking about large multistoried buildings we can't simply go in for normal strengthening of beams, columns, and other structural elements. There we had an alternative to speak about some elements such as Bearing, Bracing, Friction pendulum and Dampers which are primarily meant to take Vibration produced by lateral force.Rubber Bearings: Rubber bearings are made from layers Of rubber with thin steel plates between them, and a thick steel plate on the top and bottom. The bearings are placed between the bottom of a building and its foundation . The bearings are designed to be very stiff and strong for vertical load to carry the weight of the building an d designed to be much weaker for horizontal loads, so that they can move sideways due to lateral thrust. Rubber Bearing Viscous Dampers Viscous Dampers: Viscous fluid dampers are meant as shock absorbers. They consist of a closed cylinder containing a viscous fluid and a piston having small holes in its head. As the 10 piston move in and out of the cylinder oil is forced in and out causing friction. The damper is usually installed as part of a building's bracing system using single diagonals. As the building sways to and fro, the piston is forced In and out of the cylinder. Friction Dampers: Friction dampers are designed to have moving parts that will slide over each other. The damper is made up from a set Of steel plates, with slotted holes in hem, and they are bolted together. At high enough forces, the plates can slide over each other creating friction causing energy dissipation. The plates are specially treated to increase the friction between them. Friction Dampers Cross Bearing s (In foundation) Cross Bracing: These are very common in case of vertical load distribution. But we can also adopt this technique to foundation, in which the entire building will be laid in a cross horizontal bracing rather than placing it directly on foundation. It will distribute the load to joints and through foundation finally. Friction bearing (Location, Appearance) 11 Friction Pendulum: Considering about the large multistory buildings, we can always expect some appreciable movement in it base due to the vibration. Instead to resist against it completely we can allow the structure to deform at its foundation level by provision of friction pendulum without damaging the structural integrity.

Analysis of Ghosts in The Bonesetters Daughter Essays
Analysis of Ghosts in The Bonesetters Daughter Essays Analysis of Ghosts in The Bonesetters Daughter Paper Analysis of Ghosts in The Bonesetters Daughter Paper Ghosts are prevalent throughout many novels and are used to create certain affects on the reader. The writers purpose in incorporating these ghosts into their novels constitute to various reasons, some that may be quite obvious, while others remain underlying for the readers to interpret and discover on their own. In the novels The Bonesetters Daughter, Yo! , and The Antelope Wife, ghosts and supernatural occurrences are all used by the characters in order to retain their authenticity. Amy Tan uses ghosts in her novel The Bonesetters Daughter a medium or withholding the values of the characters culture of origin, such as prudence and sacrifice, and how these qualities make a person strong and able to withstand whatever obstacles life has for them. The Bonesetters Daughter is laid out into three different parts: Part One begins with a narration through Ruths eyes, Part Two is narrated by LuLing, and Part Three is finished once again by Ruth. Throughout part one, Ruth talks about how unhappy LuLing is, for example on page sixteen Tan writes, Her mother was permanently unhappy with everything and everybody. In the novel, LuLings life is portrayed as a ne of dyer struggle and surmised of many misfortunes. Yet, it seems that the main cause of this unhappiness stems from Precious Aunties ghost that LuLing claims to be haunted by throughout the novel. The pain (i. e. the ghost) that Luling must deal with is representative of the suppression of her secrets, feelings, and g rief that she holds within herself. LuLing has many secrets that she keeps to herself, and refrains from telling anyone (even her own daughter-Ruth). At first glance, a reader might question, Why does LuLing withhold so many secrets? Why doesnt LuLing tell Ruth hat has happened in her life? What is the point of withholding these secrets that seem to be leading LuLing to an unhappy life? In order to answer these questions there is a need for outside sources to bring in, in order to better understand the underlying reasons for withholding secrets and in turn discover the reasons for the presence of Precious Aunties ghost. First, in the context of the Chinese culture that LuLing was brought up in, Confucianism plays a significant role throughout the novel. Some of the ideals of Confucianism include respect of elders and tradition, obedience to authority and overnment, and most importantly the promotion of collective wellbeing over that of the individual (cite? ). The retention of these values from LuLings upbringing may have been a determining fact in her decision to keep the things that have happened in her life as secrets. For instance, throughout her life LuLing does not tell her daughter Ruth the truth about Precious Auntie and how in actuality Precious Auntie is Ruths grandmother. In part three of the novel, once Ruth finds out the truth that Precious Auntie was her grandmother, Ruth begins to question why her mother ould hold something like this from her own daughter, Tan writes, Why did she feel she could never tell Ruth that Precious Auntie was her mother? Did she fear that her own daughter would be ashamed that LuLing was illegitimate? From this, it may be secret, is that LuLing is aiming to protect Ruth from the reality that her mother is an illegitimate child. The pain of this reality is withheld within LuLing in order to protect others (Ruth) from sharing in the pain; it is in a sense a form of sacrifice. Further analysis into the novel reveals the clashing of generations that is made xplicit through conflicting ideals and philosophies. In an article titled, miou Dont Need Their Approval: The Decline of Social Rules author Jean M. Twenge argues that my generation (Generation Me) takes for granted their philosophy of do what makes you happy, and dont worry about what other people think. She believes that this has had an overall negative effect on society and has caused for the downfall of social rules and deterioration of manners and politeness. The clashes of generations in the novel reveal these opposing philosophies. (i. e. Confucianism vs. GenMes philosophy). This clashing of generations shows through in part one chapter four during the Full Moon Festival. In this scene, the youngest generation in the family implement the exact GenMe philosophy that Twenge writes about. When Ruth arrives at the restaurant she finds out that Fia and Dory have gone to the store and end up showing up to the dinner after LuLing has arrived. This shows how as the generations progress they begin to disregard manners and care for only themselves. Furthermore, an incident takes place where Nicky (of the youngest generation) is messing around and ends up knocking over a water glass causing LuLing to Jump up and chastise the boy. Again we see the values that LuLing cherishes begin to diminish through subsequent generations. In the novel the characters respond and interpret ghosts in different ways that expose the losing of values from their culture of origin. The interaction between the ghosts and characters, which also brings into play the theme of silence, can potentially provide a measurement of the strength of that person due to their ability to hold in their pain. In the novel there are several incidences where decisions are made by the characters based on GenMes philosophy of do what makes you happy here they either decide to stay silent or voice themselves with ignorant disregard for the affects of their communication/non-communication on the wellbeing of others. This is made extremely important in the novel because of the characters reliance on each other for their voice to be heard. In part two of the novel LuLing narrates the story of her life as well as the life of Precious Auntie and the bond that they shared together. Precious Auntie is unable to speak and can only communicate through LuLing since she is the only one that can understand her.

Carbonemys Facts and Figures
Carbonemys Facts and Figures Name: Carbonemys (Greek for coal turtle); pronounced car-BON-eh-miss Habitat: Swamps of South America Historical Epoch: Paleocene (60 million years ago) Size and Weight: About 10 feet long and one ton Diet: Small animals Distinguishing Characteristics: Large size; capacious shell; powerful jaws About Carbonemys Its fitting that the name Carbonemys starts with car, because this Paleocene turtle was about the size of a small automobile (and, considering its massive bulk and cold-blooded metabolism, it probably didnt get very impressive gas mileage). Discovered in 2005, but only announced to the world in 2012, Carbonemys was far from the biggest prehistoric turtle that ever lived; two Cretaceous turtles that preceded it by millions of years, Archelonà and Protostega, were probably twice as heavy. Carbonemys wasnt even the biggest pleurodire (side-necked) turtle in history, outclassed by Stupendemys, which lived over 50 million years later. So why has Carbonemys been getting so much attention? Well, for one thing, Volkswagen Beetle-sized turtles arent discovered every day. For another, Carbonemys was equipped with an unusually powerful set of jaws, which leads paleontologists to speculate that this giant turtle feasted on comparably sized mammals and reptiles, possibly including crocodiles. And for a third, Carbonemys shared its South American habitat with the one-ton prehistoric snake Titanoboa, which may not have been above chowing down on the occasional turtle when circumstances demanded!

Proposal to Review How Previous Instances of Global Financial Crises Assignment
Proposal to Review How Previous Instances of Global Financial Crises can be used to Forecast Developing Financial Crisis - Assignment Example These can be used to analyse how such crises could be avoided. This proposal includes detailed descriptions of my methodology for collecting data, schedule for the review as well as my relevant qualifications that make me well suited to this job. Justification of Review The twentieth century witnessed its first financial crisis early within the first quarter. Consequently, the world drifted into another greater war in an effort to gather enough fiscal resources to claim complete financial independence. (Friedman and Scwartz) The financial imbroglio is considered to have emerged as a result of loose ended banking policies. Multiple symptoms were experienced before the financial crisis in the shape of minor fiscal hiccups such as the New York Stock Exchange Crash of 1901, the banking panic of 1907, the panic of 1910-11 and the Shanghai rubber stock market crisis. (Bernanke) The final manifestation came through in the form of the Wall Street Crash of 1929 which crossed the Atlantic and caused militant ideologies to spring up throughout Europe. Consequently, the Second World War broke out which plunged the entire world into untold misery and conflict. This major upheaval was followed closely by the oil crisis of 1973 that was brought about by OPEC in response to the stock market crash of 1973-74. This crisis was followed closely by a scramble for the Middle East which has had far reaching consequences as authoritarian rules sprung up and fuelled militancy. It would not be an exaggeration to relate that the attacks on American soil on September 11, 2001 had roots in the oil crisis and its consequences. Moreover, the oil crisis of 1973 redefined the ways in which consumption patterns were organised. The escalation of oil prices encouraged the use of more efficient vehicles and promoted a drive towards more sustainable forms of energy such as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). (Eichengreen) Other than the financial crisis listed above, South America saw the development of a debt crisis that soon engulfed the region. The problem began with the ââ¬Å"Mexican Weekendâ⬠bank default in 1982 that served as a catalyst for the entire regionââ¬â¢s banking systems to crash. The resulting imbroglio witnessed the Latin American debt crisis that forced these already marginalised nations to cut further spending on social development programs. Consequently, the eighties and nineties played host to the development of large drug cartels and mafias that employed the scores on unemployed youth. The resulting struggle in South America left scores dead and saw drug trafficking to the First World increase by leaps and bounds. Names such as Pablo Escobar became legends by becoming philanthropists out of drug money while millions of youth spoiled their lives around the globe using the same drugs. The onset of the nineties saw the development of financial crisis in both the United States and Japan. The high point of financial crises culminated when Japan was hit b y the 1997 stock market crash. Large names such as Casio and Yamaha defaulted and Japansââ¬â¢ position as the prime producer of precision goods declined. However, the financial crisis did not limit itself to Japan but spread to other parts of Asia and caused a storm of devaluations to take place. This was followed closely by the Russian financial crisis of 1998 that saw the government weakened to an extent that it could not pay off pays for its employees. Large banks collapsed and mafias

Services marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Services marketing - Essay Example Service marketing is the marketing of service or performances of the service seller. Service is intangible in nature and hence it cannot be measured. Similarly, service marketing is also intangible and cannot be gauged easily. The reason behind the distinction between that of the product marketing and service marketing is because of the fact that services are more heterogeneous in nature. There is no uniformity when it comes to service marketing as there are different types of services available. Crux of service depends on its uniqueness. If a better service is provided then that particular company will get to sell more of its services. Thus there is no standardization in marketing as opposed to that of the products. You need to bring this awareness into the customers as well. Literature Review Marketing Types and Characteristics There are different types of marketing needs. One of the marketing types is that of the product marketing wherein the customerââ¬â¢s needs toward the products are taken care of. Product marketing is easy to gauge and thus will provide a clear cut approach for marketing. The manufacturing of the product is based on the product marketing. If the demand from the customer is more then more such products will be manufactured. Service is something that is rendered as per the requirement of the service buyer. Both service buyer and service seller plays a major important role in the market of service. Service marketing is entirely different from that of the product marketing and requires a completely new approach than that of the product marketing. The four major characteristics of marketing play a major role in optimizing of the service marketing. They are intangibility, heterogeneity, intangibility and perishable nature. In view of Bruhn M. and Georgi D. (2006, p. 478), the service indu stry has got a value chain that it needs to follow through in the process of marketing. Once the managing of service value chain is mastered then it becomes quiet easy thereafter. A set procedure will make a huge difference. A lot of factors that can be attributed to service marketing, that makes gives it a winning edge. Services have a special angle to it as they can never be stored for future consumption. It has to be used then and there. Thus service is produced and consumed at the same time. Perishable in nature services need to be utilized when it is produced. Marketing of services needs a lot of other contributing factor. Say for instance, if you are marketing a product, only the product needs to be good. If the product is good then people will go for it without any further questioning. On the other hand service marketing needs a lot of attractive features such as the company that renders service should be well known in the market. The person who is undertaking the responsibil ity to deliver the service should also be good and impressive. Only then the service will be sought after. The distinct nature of service marketing It is the service industry that needs more of marketing than that of the product manufacturing. Hence service marketing is more important aspect of the business. People need to get the name of
Israel 2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Israel 2 - Essay Example ââ¬Å"In contrast to these sources which presuppose that the Omrides were strong rulers over an autonomous kingdom and in hostile relations with the Yahwistic prophets, the stories of the three battles with Ben-haded and the Elisha stories presuppose quite a different situation. Both of these narrative groupsâ⬠¦depict the king or kings of Israel as international weaklings, bullied by the Syrian kings of Samaria.â⬠(Miller and Hayes, 262) Therefore, as pointed out by Miller and Hayes, the sources relating to the Omride kings disagree over the political power of the Omrides. Similarly, the authors argue that there are significant conflicts in the sources relating to the Omride kings as the sources disagree over the sequence of Syrian kings during the period of the Omrides. The information about the sequence of Syrian kings during the period of the Omrides conflicts ââ¬Å"with the biblical stories of the three battles with Ben-haded as well as with the Elisha stories, if one assumes that these two narrative groups are in proper context. That is, if the stories of the three battles with Ben-haded actually pertain to the last years of Ahab and the Elisha stories actually pertain to Jehoramââ¬â¢s reign, then we have a Ben-haded on the throne of Syria followed by Hazel rather than a Hadadezer followed by Hazel.â⬠(Miller and Hayes, 263) Miller and Hayes provide an important picture of Omri and Ahab in international politics/affairs in the famous book A History of Ancient Israel and Judah and they give convincing evidences to establish and support their picture. According to the authors, Israel reached the zenith of its glory during the rule of Omri and Ahab. The readers are not able to gather a great picture about Omri from the documents, although he is the earliest biblical characters to be mentioned in ancient non-biblical documents and also the first king

Absenteeism within the Work Place Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Absenteeism within the Work Place - Essay Example Researchers as well as practitioners are also performing their part to find a remedy that can at least reduce employee absenteeism and thereby improve the productivity and savings in cost. It is known commonly that absenteeism results in cost and productivity problems, puts extra burden on other employees, and ultimately affects adversely customer satisfaction and the country's economy. It has been observed through many studies that lack of absenteeism results in better quality, lower costs, and greater productivity (Hazzard, 1990). Absenteeism is pervasive in all organization irrespective of size, type and nature. However, it is higher in manufacturing organizations. Research supports both reward and punitive mechanism of destructing absenteeism and helping organizations meet its demand to various stakeholders. The present study is an attempt to suggest some solutions to this mounting problem of workers absenteeism. The study basically aims to assess the reasons of absenteeism among the selected sample respondents from industrial background. It also attempts to understand the impact of unauthorized absenteeism on productivity and cost of production and ultimately on profit. The study takes a descriptive as well as explorative approach where in attempt is made by the researcher to describe the various factors responsible for employee absenteeism and to explore the relationship between variables.... It also covers studies and publications on remedial measures of absenteeism adopted by employers and those suggested by researchers and practitioners. As already mentioned, absenteeism is a universal phenomenon. However, it is mostly seen in the manufacturing/industrial sectors. It has been observed that employee absenteeism is higher in manufacturing organisations than in any other areas (Hazzard, 1990). It has also been understood that it is higher in union settings than in nonunion settings. Another significant study concludes that absenteeism is more common among women than men as women are more sensitive to family needs (Dunn and Youngblood, 1986). Another interesting finding is that absenteeism is high among unmarried than among married workers. The reason for the same observed is that married employees find more financial pressure than single employees and as such there is less chance of employees taking unscheduled leaves (Drago and Wooden, 1992). The studies undertaken so far to explore the reasons for/ factors responsible for employee absenteeism vary one to another. However, one common conclusion among studies across industries and countries is that employee unscheduled absenteeism should be restricted and given due importance as it will serious repercussions on productivity and profitability. Steers and Rhodes (1984) claim that employee attendance is determined by two factors, basically, (a) employee's motivation to attend, and (b) the employee's ability to attend. The first factor is concerned with the organizational factors that stimulate employees to attend for the work. These factors include cordial working
Survey Research4 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Survey Research4 - Essay Example The quality of service is said to be the gap between customer expectations and the actual performance they receive. (Parasuraman et al, 1994; Tsang and Qu, 2000). When customers are pleased with the service they receive, they are likely to patronize the hotel again and again, which reduces advertising costs. In particular, previous studies have shown that the quality of service offered by front line personnel has a great impact on levels of customer satisfaction (Dunaway, 2002: McKenna, 2002). Furthermore, customer loyalty at hotels may be largely dependent on the quality of housekeeping services and the room itself. (Kandampully and Suhartanto, 2000; Parasuraman et al, 1991). These are some of the important elements that have been identified in the literature as contributing to customer perception of quality in service. In developing a survey instrument, McDowell(2006) points out that the method used must set out a comparison between the theory vs the reality, which is the need identified that is to be examined in the survey. In this case, the theory identifies two important elements that are crucial in customer perception of service. They are (a) the quality of front line services and (b) the room and housekeeping services. The need identified in this study is to examine how these elements may be applicable specifically in four star hotels. On the basis of this, the survey instrument is to be designed.(McDowell, 2006:30-54). In developing face validity for the questionnaire, it is necessary to address the following aspects ââ¬â what is the need to test the items through the survey? Why do we need to ask these questions and how should they be asked? In this survey, the need that has been identified is that of testing perception of service quality in four-star hotels. The service quality is very important because four-star hotels are more expensive, therefore customers expect higher levels of service from these hotels. As a result, it is

Public Schools Segregation Essay Example for Free
Public Schools Segregation Essay I was recently struck by one of the political cartoons in the SacramentoBee newspaper, which presented an image comparison of drinking fountains in two schools. It quickly reminded me of the racist Jim Crow laws from the 1880s-1960s and how racial segregation existed almost everywhere in the United States at that time. However, I realize that this cartoon doesnââ¬â¢t portray the concept of racial segregation with a Jim Crow joke, but it makes a commentary on social segregation among public schools in the United States today. I slowly realized that all American public schools are not the same due to funding. The huge difference exists in the public school system because their funding is associated with local property taxes. If a school is located in an affluent area with wealthier residents who pay high property taxes, schools will receive more funding (School Funding 1). Do you think this system is fair? If I ask affluent parents, they probably would answer that they pay high property taxes, so their money should go straight to nourish public schools in their areas. Meanwhile, if I were to ask parents in low socioeconomic areas, they would say that funds should be distributed from the state and not by the county, which would help in reducing the inequality between schools. Although sharing funds is not fair for many affluent people who pay more taxes, we should encourage state governments to aid the poorer schools more because it helps to reduce poverty and prevent crimes in lower income neighborhoods. The first reason that poorer schools should get more funds is to reduce poverty. People in low-income areas might not get the direct effect from school funding, but in the future, their kids will be benefited greatly. For those in the low income bracket, education can be a legitimate way to help them climb out of poverty. However, in reality, most of these poorer schools today are still not treated equally as their richer counterparts. Lisa Black, Chicago Tribune reporter reviewed the vast difference between two public schools in the Chicago area to illustrate this point. The first school, Taft Elementary School in Lockport canââ¬â¢t offer students any arts, language or technology classes because of the limited budget available. Meanwhile, Rondout Elementary School, near Lake Forest, offers language programs such as Spanish in every grade including kindergarten. Most students use laptops in the class, and they can enjoy band and chorus classes. They can choose to study various art, drama and dance as well (Black 1). If poor children had the same opportunity as their counterparts, imagine the growth it could represent to them educational. If they enjoyed studying, they could move on to obtain higher education by attending to colleges, meaning better-paying jobs. Therefore, funds should be available for all people. Young minds deserve the opportunity to choose the programs that they want to study. They should be able to study art and any other subject, as they desire to, regardless of how much property tax their parents pay. In general, I believe that a good education is the foundation that can pave the way to a better quality of life. Aside from reducing poverty, preventing crimes is another reason that poorer schools should receive more funds. Crimes in lower income areas derive from being unable to sustain a decent living. These types of crimes can be directly connected to a lack of education and opportunity. Geoffrey Wodtke, a sociologist at the University of Michigan, mentions in his article that kids in poor neighborhood have less chance to graduate from high school (Wodtke 1). He also states: Poor neighborhoods are isolated and racially segregated, with none of the quality schools, day care, grocery stores, pharmacies, and parks that can help promote a childââ¬â¢s development and academic achievement; and they are disproportionately smoggy, crime-ridden and dilapidated. All of these factors, the researchers note, have been linked to poor performance in school, often culminating in dropouts. (1) Wodtke claims that poor neighborhoods affect school performance, and this can impact a childââ¬â¢s learning directly. Some children quit the schools because they have no interest in schooling. Dropping out is and having no high school diploma will limit a job opportunities. When they are not qualified for many jobs, they canââ¬â¢t escape the pitfalls of poverty. Therefore, some of them end up finding illegal ways to make money while others affiliate themselves with gangs (Wodtke 2). This is the reason why school is so important, because it is a good place to start children on equal footing educationally with the chance to better themselves in the future. However, schools in low-income areas still need more funds to afford having a variety of programs such as language, art and sports. Schools also need to be able to hire and retain qualified teachers. Moreover, every school should be able to afford sport programs, which is a good physical outlet for youthful energy and encourages good health and teamwork. Art programs should also be available because they provide an outlet to express creativity. A wider variety of activities and educational alternatives can create brighter and more promising futures if given the opportunities. These children can become doctors, football players or artists in the future as long as they get a fair amount of support from the beginning. Itââ¬â¢s difficult to change the living environment in poorer neighborhoods, but we can start by improving the school system to reshape the future of that community. Some people think that pouring money into poor schools is wasteful. They believe the reason schools become poorly performing ones is because they are full of under-achieving students who lack interest in the curriculum. Even if some schools get more funds, it will not change anything. Itââ¬â¢s like treating symptoms, but not starting at the root of the problem. They believe that the government should provide more funding to schools with higher achieving students who potentially will become successful contributing members of the community. In other words, the state government should invest in the right schools and students. However, I believe this thought to be completely wrong. People who believe this will never know the potential of students in lower-income schools unless they are given a fair and equal opportunity to succeed. If poorer schools receive more funding, they will be able to provide better facilities and a stronger variety in the curriculum. These factors would increase the chances that we see more students grow into productive and successful adults despite coming from lower class surroundings. When every school has the same resources and variety of programs available to their youths, political cartoons like this one will be a thing of the past because the educational systemââ¬â¢s inequalities will no longer be a joke. We should call for action on the funding to reform poorer schools because education can help in reducing poverty and crimes in these neighborhoods. Although affluent parents who work harder and pay more property taxes might oppose an idea of distributed funding to poor schools, they should think about economic consequences. If a gap between rich schools and poor schools is still expanding, how can the children of today become responsible adults in the future? If this country is the land of freedom and opportunity for everyone, I should hope that schools would be the first place to start by giving equal opportunities to all children. Poorer schools should receive equal opportunities like those of the children in wealthier communities. Schools should be a sacred place where all children of any social standing are afforded the same opportunities of unlimited educational growth. The more we see children shine in their youth, the more likely they will rise up to become successful in the future and this will help strengthen the future of the United Statesââ¬â¢ socially and economically.

Swedish Government Response to Prostitution
Swedish Government Response to Prostitution According to the WHO, prostitution is the exchange of money or goods for sexual services. Over the past decade, governments policies on prostitution have been contested both in academia and in popular debates. There have been approaches adopted by different countries, with a significant shift away from prohibition, towards legalization and decriminalization of prostitution. Understanding how countries regulate prostitution laws and adapt to the various models is critical for governments to observe. By analyzing the stances of the government, those involved in the sex industry, and the public, they can provide insight towards which approach other countries may find beneficial. Therefore, this paper will focus on the political implications of the attempts of various governments in regulating prostitution. By passing the Sex Purchase Act in 1999, the Swedish government took an unprecedented approach, decriminalizing prostitutes but prohibiting the purchase of sexual services (citation). The Swedish Model is known as partial decriminalization which primarily focuses on the governments stance regarding prostitution as intrinsically harmful to women and a hindrance to the governments goal of achieving full gender equality (cite reliability of government source citation). Because the Swedish laws base their alignment on the underlying principle of the gender equality policy, the government approaches prostitution from a perspective of gender equality and human rights by prohibiting the purchase of sexual services criminalizing the buyers. The model recognizes prostituted women as victims who are unjustly treated due to their weaknesses and clearly reflects the governments policy which desires to empower women to get out of prostitution. The Swedish government claims that partial decriminalization has improved prostitutes rights and reduced the rates of prostitution (citation). The Social Security Scheme grants prostitutes access to welfare and health care as taxable workers. These programs assisted nearly sixty percent of Swedens prostitutes quitting the practice (citation). The reduction in demand for prostitution is another significant result of the Swedish Model. As the current legislation punishes buyers with huge fines and a maximum of twelve months in prison, men have become less inclined to buy sexual services. According to research from the Nordic Gender Institute, the number of clients in Sweden from 1996 to 2008 declined from 13.6 % to 7.9 % (citation). By focusing on the demand side through prosecuting buyers, it may be easier for Sweden to eliminate a market for prostitution. Swedens current legislation is founded upon the publics acceptance of the gender-equality policy, stressing the value that women are not commodities. A study in 2001 reported that over 80% of the population supported the law and the principles behind partial decriminalization (citation why it is relevant). As the law received significant support, Swedish public attitude concerning the Sex Purchase Act changed. Four opinion polls, Kuosmanen study, SIFO, Swedish branch of TNS, Custom Market Research, showed that more than 70 percent of those asked had a positive view of the regulation (citation relevant). Judging by the results of four opinion polls, the publics view reflects the societys support for the Swedish Model. Thus, the government cannot discount the influence of the gender equality policy in changing societal attitudes towards partial decriminalization. Liberal feminists and some sex workers actively critique the law, arguing that it leaves sex workers stigmatized. Liberal feminists see prostitution as a womans choice to have sexual relations. A sex worker writes in the British Medical Journal, saying, Prostitution is having sex for money, and neither having sex nor getting paid is inherently degrading, abusive, exploitative, or harmful. The problem is coercion, drug dependency, lack of choices, not prostitution itself (Prostitution shake-up). Liberal feminists argue that Swedish law fundamentally infantilizes women by stigmatizing prostitutes through propagating stereotypical notions that women who sell sex are victims of prostitution. They object to the fact that the Swedish government did not consult sex workers or organizations regarding the law-making process. Because of the inability to voice their rights and partake in influencing government decisions, liberal feminists claim that prostitutes have been left powerless. Due to the lack of women in Nevada during its settlement in the 1800s, prostitution was considered a vital commodity which brought about a tolerant attitude towards the legalization of modern day brothels (citation history). In 1971, Nevada passed a law giving counties the ability to legalize brothels. Eric Herzik, chairman of the political science department at the University of Nevada, contends that the law on prostitution started out similarly due to the political culture of a libertarian system of government, which has legalized prize fighting, gambling, and divorce (Las Vegas Review study relevance). Though Nevada is the only state in the United States where prostitution is legal, it is subject to restrictions. The law permits prostitution in brothels in eight of the sixteen counties and does not allow any county with a population over 700,000 to license brothels (citation). This type of legalization, also known as the Nevada Model, decriminalizes prostitution in brothels, requi ring government supervision with strict regulations. The effects of legalization had an immediate impact as prostitutes had to undergo medical tests. From the perspective of those involved in the sex industry, the Nevada model has ensured their health and safety. A recent study published in the American Journal of Public Health reveals that of the combined 3,290 clients of forty different legal sex workers, not one received sex without a condom (Albert and Warner). This result was due to a new law established in 1986 which required the mandatory usage of condoms during sexual activities. Moreover, the Nevada State Health Department reported that there were no cases of HIV/AIDS found in legal brothels (citation). The regulation has taken the health of prostitutes seriously to make brothels a safe and clean place (Brents and Hausback 2005). The installation of emergency buttons and regular police inspections have been the main reasons why some prostitutes prefer to work in a licensed brothel as they feel a sense of safety and receive pro tection from violence (citation). Since brothel owners consider prostitutes as independent contractors, they do not receive benefits of health care, vacation, retirement, or any other benefits full-time employees have. In response, prostitutes stress that regulation has discouraged them from getting licenses because they are left with about fifty percent of earnings after expenses, including boarding, maid services, condoms, and weekly medical checkups (citation). In addition to earning a meager living after paying all the expenses, they argue that the regulation fails to guarantee them unemployment insurances when fired (citation). While some view legalization as beneficial to prostitutes in regards to safety and health, others argue that the law imposes various obligations, overlooking violations of workers rights which benefits brothels and counties far more than individual prostitutes. The Swedish and Nevada models are examples of government choices in regulating prostitution. While the Swedish government and its proponents reason that partial decriminalization has fulfilled the gender equality policy, improved sex workers rights, and reduced prostitution rates, liberal feminists and those against the law claim that it has left prostitutes powerless and stigmatized. The government of Nevada and those involved in the industry acknowledge the health and security benefits of the law; however, sex workers argue that imposing strict rules further reduces their rights. Ultimately, the importance of understanding the two models and their political implications is vital as it may help governments to decide on which type of model they may enact in the future.

The History of Advertising :: Advertisements Media Advertising Essays
The History of Advertising Advertising is dated back to the Christian Era. One of the first known methods of advertising was outdoor signs, they would be painted on the wall of a building and were usually very eye catching. Archaeologists have found signs in the ruins of ancient Rome and Pompeii which advertised travelers to go to a tavern situated in another town. In about the 1440's there was an invention of a movable-type of advertising which was a printing press. In the 16th century some companies had a trade mark which was a two or three dimensional picture or sign. In both volume and technique, advertising has made its greatest advances in the U.S. In the early stages of U.S. advertising it was hard and expensive to advertise nationally because the U.S. was still undeveloped and there was little of no means of transport, distribution or communication. Eventually certain type of manufactures thought of the idea of bypassing wholesalers, retailers and using catalogs. Mail orders and pamphlets appeared around the 1870's. Late in the 19th century many American firms began to market packaged goods under brand names. Previously consumers had not been aware of or influenced by brand names. The first product that had brand names were soap products. In the 1880's a few brands came out and they were Ivory, Pears, Sapolio, Colgate, Kirks American Family and Packer's. Not long after brands such as Royal baking powder, Quaker oats, Bakers chocolate, Hire's root beer, Regal shoes and Waterman's pens were nationally advertised. In the early 1900's America began to become aware of such brand names like Bon Ami, Wrigley and Coca-Cola. After World War 1 advertising developed into a business so big that it was almost a trademark of America itself through the eyes of the rest of the world. This was expanded by technical improvements which made transportation, communication and graphics work easier, cheaper and better. The invention of electricity led to the illuminated outdoor poster, photoengraving and other modern printing inventions helped both editorial and advertising departments of printed journals. In the 1920's the radio was invented and this developed a whole new technique of selling, by voice. During World War 2 the American advertising industry founded the war advertising council this used modern advertising to strengthen the American war effort. The organization still continued after the war was over as ââ¬ËThe Advertising Council' this was used to function for the publics interest. Printed and broadcasted

This especially holds true for those who don't have great hygiene or respect personal space. Why do you put up with them? Why not just tell them they smell bad and get it over with? You shut your mouth because you have to be a professional, and you have to get along in order to get ahead. Professional sacrifice is also why you don't yell and scream at people who don't do a DOD job.You don't want others to feel bad, but you don't want to look like you are short tempered. This doesn't help anyone, and you can get in trouble for it. Even If you are saying what others are thinking, it still requires you to restrain yourself and stay quiet. The betterment of your career is why you show up five minutes early to work. It's why you go to Buffalo for a job when you have been living in San Diego your whole life. No one wants to go across the country when it is much easier to stay where you are happy. No one wants to get to work early when we all know that work isn't fun.

Business: Organise and report data Essay
Knowledge and Understanding Describe different ways of organising data that has been researchedData is a group of information that is used for lots of different purposes. Data reporting is when data is extracted form of source or many sources and then converted into a certain format which then can be used for a certain purpose. There are lots of different ways to organise data such as tables, charts, graphs, statistics or spread sheets. This data can be used to come to lots of conclusions and make important decisions in the business. So because the data is so important it must be produced in a clear way that meets the objectives and targets of the organisation. Describe different ways of reporting dataThere are lots of different ways of reporting data. Good examples of it being shown is in spread sheets, bar charts etc. When delivering data to other members of staff it can be done verbally or via emails or sit with them face to face and have a one to one meeting. In my work place I only work in the office with one other person (Tracy) so we talk all day and I update her on all my emails etc. Describe the purpose of presenting data to the agreed format and within the agreed timescaleWhen presenting data, it must be presented in a agreed format and must be also within the agreed timescale, this is so then the person that is waiting on it gets it the way that they would like it. For example they might need it in a spread sheet as they might not be able to see any other document. I do a e-shot list of all customers emails and I put them into a spread sheet format on Microsoft excel. I put all the names and emails of customers in a list and once I have completed this I check it over and send it via email over to our marketing manager Stewart. Who then will email all our customers our latest offers and deals.
Scripting multimedia web pages
Chapter 07: Scripting multimedia web pagesSCRIPTING MULTIMEDIA WEB PAGES LEARNING OUTCOMEUpon the completion of this chapter you should be able to:Understand assorted scripting methods used for web page designing.Know the different types of scheduling linguistic communications.Know the OOP paradigm and Java book.Know OOP paradigm and slangUnderstand the Java 3D theoretical account.Know the assorted multimedia formats.7.1 Scripting multimedia web pagesMultimedia would be lifeless without scripting. Multimedia becomes synergistic when scripting is added to it. The interaction characteristics such as doing a bill of fare button, alteration of colour on axial rotation over of mouse, signifier filling on a web page and compilation and directing that information to another topographic point ; opening a new browser window when choosing a hyperlink ; triping a new sequence when an image is selected or even doing simple games.7.1.1 Types of scheduling linguistic communicationsMachine codification is the most basic type of scheduling.Machine codification is merely one typeIt is composed merely of the two binary figures: 0 and 1.Interpretation of the machine codification depends on the hardware running in the computing machine.Programing linguistic communications are of many types. The most of import linguistic communications are:General-purpose scheduling linguistic communicationScripting scheduling linguistic communicationObject-oriented scheduling linguistic communicationGeneral-purpose scheduling linguistic communications include Java, C and C++ . These linguistic communications are to be compiled by a compiler plan. A compiler is a plan which translates beginning codification written in a peculiar scheduling linguistic communication into computer-readable machine codification that can be executed on its ain. JavaScript, Flash ActionScript and Lingo come under Scripting linguistic communications ; nevertheless it uses Object-oriented linguistic communication every bit good. General characteristics of scripting linguistic communications are:Easy to larn and utilizeNeed non be compiledBy and large interpreted at run-timeAssociated with a diverse scope of bing computing machine constituentsAble to pass on with other scheduling and scripting linguistic communications.7.1.2 Basic control constructionsPrograming linguistic communications have control constructions that direct the flow of information. The three basic control constructions are:sequencechoicerepeatConsecutive control construction:The stairss from start to complete are absolutely carried out one after another, without any break. Selection control construction:These are statements where a true/false pick is made. The ââ¬Ë if ââ¬Ë statement:If the status is true, so a certain action or actions can be triggered ; if false, so they are ignored. These types of statements are normally known as an ââ¬Ëif ââ¬Ë statement. The ââ¬Ëif/else ââ¬Ë statement:If the status is true, so a certain action or actions can be triggered ; if false, so a certain action or actions can be triggered. Repetition control construction:These are statements that are often acted upon while a peculiar status remains true. While the status is true, the needed actions will be carried out. Equally shortly as the needed status is false, so the cringle will be ignored. It is of import to observe that there must ever be some manner to do a status false. The basic control constructions can besides work together in a sequence or nested within each other to quite complex statements.7.1.3 The OOP paradigmThe scripting languages belong to a set called Object Orientated Programming, or OOP that incorporates Lingo, ActionScript and JavaScript. OOP breaks the sequence of stairss from top to bottom into separate parts called objects that interact with each other in a non-linear manner. OOP is based on grouping scripting information into categories. From a category, multiple cases can be made and used. These cases are referred to as objects. Each object has belongingss and methods. These programming objects are same as existent universe objects. All the objects such as frames, movieClips, films, cast members, buttons, text Fieldss, etc. are merely objects made with codification. They are seeable because they have belongingss such as size, colour, place, etc. and the user can utilize them as they have methods such as drama, halt, edit, etc.Puting up for codificationJavaScript, ActionScript and Lingo have different scripting environments.JavaScript is by and large bound to net pages.ActionScript is inside the frames of a timeline and on objects such as buttons and movieClips.Lingo is like ActionScript, but has different types of books depending on where it is used.Event animal trainersAn event occurs when the mouse is moved or the mouse button is clicked, a key is pressed or a web page is loaded. It is a individual happening though it may be repeated many times a 2nd, such as enterFrame in ActionScript and Lingo. The animal trainer is the piece of codification that every book linguistic communication contains to observe the events. Some event animal trainers are common to JavaScript, ActionScript and Lingo, and some are specific to certain scripting linguistic communication. Common event animal trainers are mouseup, mouseDown and enterFrame JavaScript and ActionScript allow books to be triggered without the event animal trainer, In JavaScript, any codification that is decently added between the book ticket is carried out when loaded into the browser. In ActionScript, any codification that is right added to an single frame in any timeline will be executed when the playhead enters that frame. In Lingo, codification must be with in an event animal trainer.7.1.4 OOP and JavaScriptAll the scripting linguistic communications have default and user defined objects. Default objects are built in the scripting linguistic communication and User defined objects are 1s that are made by you. In scripting linguistic communications like JavaScript, you can hold every bit many cases of a peculiar object category as you like. Your scripting linguistic communication should cognize the specific object case you target and the belongings or method you want to command. One of the most critical belongingss is calling single object cases. In JavaScript, the ââ¬Ëname ââ¬Ë property is added to the HTML elements ticket. For illustration, to call the signifier ââ¬ËloginForm ââ¬Ë in an HTML use the undermentioned codification:& lt ; signifier name= â⬠loginForm â⬠& gt ;Objects in JavaScript are called the Document Object Model ( DOM ) . DOM is a hierarchy of objects that are contained in each HTML page. These objects are chiefly categorized into three types Window object, papers object and signifier object. Window object is at the top of the hierarchy. Document and form objects are largely manipulated. The signifier object is ever in the papers object. DOM illustration: Text field for login To entree the text in a text field i.e ââ¬Ëusername ââ¬Ë located in a signifier called ââ¬ËloginForm ââ¬Ë on a web page: document.loginForm.userName.value ( read this from right to left ) Here the scripting statement entree the ââ¬Ëvalue ââ¬Ë belongings of the text field object called ââ¬ËuserName ââ¬Ë that is in the signifier object called ââ¬ËloginForm ââ¬Ë , which is in bend is in the web page ââ¬Ës papers object. The terminal consequence of this statement is text threading value.Properties and methods in JavaScriptProperties Properties are by and large linked to the physical visual aspect of scripting objects. In existent life, objects besides have belongingss. Some belongingss of object are read-only, that is the belongings ââ¬Ës value can be retrieved but can non be changed. Other object belongingss can be retrieved and changed. These characteristics are referred to as proving or puting a belongings ââ¬Ës value. Example 1: sentence structure: JavaScript ââ¬â proving a image ââ¬Ës width belongingsdocument.greenHondaCRX.width In this illustration, the scripting statement entree the value of the ââ¬Ëwidth ââ¬Ë belongings of the image object called ââ¬ËgreenHondaCR ââ¬Ë , that is in web page ââ¬Ës papers object. Example2: sentence structure: JavaScript ââ¬â puting a image ââ¬Ës width belongingsdocument.greenHondaCRX.width = ââ¬Å" 257 â⬠In this illustration, the scripting statement is puting the value of the ââ¬Ëwidth ââ¬Ë belongings of the image object called ââ¬ËgreenHondaCR ââ¬Ë to ââ¬Ë257 ââ¬Ë . The ââ¬ËgreenHondaCR ââ¬Ë image object is in web page ââ¬Ës papers object. Methods Methods are linked to the intent and actions of an object. Real life objects can besides hold methods/actions. Methods require excess information for the object to transport out the action right. In scripting linguistic communications this excess information is referred to as a methods parametric quantities or statements. Example 3: sentence structure: JavaScript ââ¬â utilizing the history objecthistory.go ( -1 ) In this illustration, the scripting statement is utilizing the ââ¬Ëgo ââ¬Ë method of the history object. Methods are typically recognized by the usage of brackets ââ¬Å" ( ) â⬠after the methods name. The brackets are used to envelop any parametric quantities that you send to the method. In the above illustration, we are directing negative one ( -1 ) , which instructs the ââ¬Ëgo ââ¬Ë method of the ââ¬Ëhistory ââ¬Ë object to lade the old web page.7.1.5 OOP and ActionScriptIn ActionScript, select the object case on phase and enter an case name in the Properties panel. This is same as appellative variables. ActionScript uses aim waies to maintain path of object cases. These waies are laid out like a route map and object should hold a name to look on this route map. This route map is a hierarchy, with the chief timeline at its base. ActionScript shows the object hierarchy in a file by snaping the ââ¬Ëinsert mark way ââ¬Ë button situated in the ActionScript Panel. Let us take an illustration ââ¬Å" Target way ââ¬Ëroad map ââ¬Ë : Text field and button for login, â⬠where we have two objects a film cartridge holder with a text field in it and a button. They are in the root timeline. Select each point and verify its name in the Properties Panel. The movieClip has the name ââ¬ËloginClip ââ¬Ë .The text filed in the movieClip is named ââ¬ËuserName ââ¬Ë .The button is name ââ¬Ë btnLogin ââ¬Ë .Choose the button in the root timeline and open the ActionScript Panel in ââ¬ËExpert Mode ââ¬Ë Click the ââ¬ËInsert a mark way â⬠button. The ââ¬ËInsert Target Path ââ¬Ë duologue box opens and shows a ocular representation of the ââ¬Ëroad map ââ¬Ë of objects presently accessible from the timeline that we are in.In the ââ¬ËInsert Target Path ââ¬Ë duologue box, choice ââ¬ËDots ââ¬Ë and ââ¬ËAbsolute ââ¬Ë options.Click the little plus gestural ââ¬Ë+ ââ¬Ë following to the movieClip icon nam e ââ¬ËloginClip ââ¬Ë to demo the text field object in it.The existent mark way of the selected movieClip object ââ¬ËloginClip ââ¬Ë appears.Click the text filed icon ââ¬ËuserName ââ¬Ë , the mark way alters. In ActionScript, absolute mark waies ever start from the _root timeline of the file. Relative mark waies start with the current object selected on phase.Click on the option ââ¬ËRelative ââ¬Ë .Click on the little plus gestural ââ¬Ë+ ââ¬Ë following to the movieClip icon name ââ¬ËloginClip ââ¬Ë and select the ââ¬ËuserName ââ¬Ë text field. The mark way alters. Alternatively get downing with ââ¬Ë_root ââ¬Ë it now starts with ââ¬Ëthis ââ¬Ë , bespeaking the objects that are presently selected on phase. We have a mark way from the point we have originally selected on phase, the ââ¬ËbtnLogin ââ¬Ë button, to the text field ââ¬ËuserName ââ¬Ë that resides in the movieClip ââ¬ËloginClip ââ¬Ë .7.1.6 OOP and LingoIn Lingo, the most normally used objects are cast members, and cast member object cases are sprites. In Director the objects must be in the film ââ¬Ës dramatis personae to look on the phase. All cast members that are placed in the mark have a default dramatis personae member figure and a alone dramatis personae member name. Through these two dramatis personae member belongingss, Lingo communicates to specific dramatis personae members and its associated sprites. To pass on to single sprite cases in the mark, Lingo uses the fairy ââ¬Ës figure. Sprite Number Example In Director, everything that is on the phase goes into a channel in the mark. Merely one fairy can busy a channel. For illustration the fairy ââ¬Ës figure is four, the sentence structure to entree the width belongings of this fairy would be:fairy ( 4 ) .widthorthe breadth of sprite 4 Lingo has two types of sentence structure: The first codification sample uses ââ¬Ëdot ââ¬Ë sentence structure, which is in broad usage now. The 2nd illustration is what Lingo calls ââ¬Ëverbose ââ¬Ë sentence structure. Almost any Lingo statement can be written with either dot sentence structure or verbose. In the first ââ¬Ëdot ââ¬Ë syntax illustration, the scripting statement is aiming the fairy object that is in channel four of the mark and accessing its ââ¬Ëwidth ââ¬Ë belongings. To Lingo, this whole complete line of codification represents one whole number value stand foring the fairy ââ¬Ës current breadth in pels. Cast member Name Example In Director, everything that is created or imported into the dramatis personae is allocated a dramatis personae member figure and a alone dramatis personae member name. Choose a dramatis personae member and enter its name in the ââ¬ËCast Member Name ââ¬Ë text field. For illustration, a dramatis personae member 2, which its name ââ¬Å" green square â⬠:member ( ââ¬Å" green square â⬠)member ( 2 ) It is standard industry pattern to utilize cast member ââ¬Ës name instead that its figure. In some particular fortunes the usage of cast member Numberss would be effectual. For the sprite illustration in Lingo codification, the sentence structure for aiming cast member objects can be written in both ââ¬Ëdot ââ¬Ë and ââ¬Ëverbose ââ¬Ë sentence structure. In the first ââ¬Ëdot ââ¬Ë sentence structure, the scripting statement is aiming the dramatis personae member named ââ¬Å" green square â⬠and accessing its ââ¬Ëwidth ââ¬Ë belongings. To Lingo, this whole complete line of codification represents one whole number value stand foring the dramatis personae member current breadth in pels.Self cheque 7.11. If more than one dramatis personae member has the same name, what will Lingo make if that name is used in book?7.2 Java 3DJava 3D is a set of criterions that have been broaden under Java 2 for making 3D artworks. Java 3D is a scene graph-based 3D application programming interface ( API ) for the Java platform. It runs on top of either OpenGL or Direct3D.Advantages of Java 3D:Platform Mugwump:It is platform independent as it is an API extension of Java. Object-oriented 3D Artworks:It is carried out by utilizing a scene graph-based 3D artworks theoretical account. Optimized Speed:During runtime, the scene graph of the fastest possible renders is optimized by utilizing the rendition capableness spots. This facilitates the Java 3D to be used in synergistic artworks environments every bit good as high quality artworks. Rise of 3D stevedores:Free handiness of Java 3D VRML97 file stevedore and browser, with their codifications. Support Exotic Devicess:The com.sun.j3d.utils.trackers package provides Fake infinite, Logitech, and Polhemus devices.Disadvantages of Java 3D:Standard Extension API:Java 3D is a standard extension API to the Java2 platform, which is regarded as a hazard factor as it may restrict the portability of Java 3D codification across platforms. Availability Limitation:Sun is the lone key seller that is back uping Java 3D through Solaris and Win32. The cross-platform portability is a serious issue for Java 3D. Concealment of Rendering Pipeline inside informations:Java 3D a high degree API, deliberately hides inside informations of the rendering grapevine from the developer therefore doing it incompatible for applications where such inside informations are required. Heavyweight constituents:Java 3D, being heavyweight, carries out the rendering through native non-Java equal. In general the lightweight and heavyweight constituents of Java do non blend good when placed together in one object or window.7.2.1 Key differences between Java 3D and VRMLProgram attack: In making 3D universes, VRML adopts a content-centric attack and Java 3D adopts a program-centric attack. Flexibility:Java 3D is more lissome in footings of programming manner and the maps available. The better figure of available maps makes Java 3D a better tool in making specific and modified behaviour and applications. Java 3D provides extended support for behaviours, interpolators, niping and hit sensing. Application complexness:VRML is more suited for simple artworks applications where as Java 3D is more suited for making the content or 3D universe applications. File format:VRML has a standardized file format. Java 3D, has capableness to back up compiled codification of low degree API for faster 3D artworks rendering. Compatibility:Java 3D supports VRML objects through the VRML97 stevedore but VRML can non run Java 3D plans. Dynamic fluctuation of scene graph:The scene graph that describes the practical 3D universe created in Java 3D can be changed dynamically but in VRML it is non executable. Vendor support:Most of the sellers support VRML than Java 3D. Some portion of Java 3D is basically evolves from OpenGL. OpenGL is non good suited for developing complicated 3D artworks applications due to programming, debugging, and care attempts.FeaturesMultithreaded scene graph constructionGeneric Real-time API, useable for both visual image and gamblingSupport for retained, compiled-retained, and immediate manners renderingIncludes hardware-accelerated JOGL, OpenGL and Direct3D renderers ( depending on platform )Platform independentNative support for head-mounted showCAVE ( multiple screen projectors )3D spacial soundcomplicated virtual-reality-based position theoretical account with clasp for stereoscopic rendition and complex multi-display constellationsProgrammable shaders, back uping both GLSL and CGImporters for most mainstream formats, like 3DS, OBJ, VRML, X3D, NWN, and FLTStencil bufferSelf cheque 7.21. If the file is an HTML page, the browser spots the file extensions as.htm or.html. If it is an XML file, the browser spots it as.xml extension and the manner sheet is spotted as.css. Image formats are identified by extensions like.gif and.jpg.Windows Multimedia Formats:Windows media files have the extensions like.asf, .asx, .wma, and.wmv. Advanced Streaming Format ( ASF ) ASF is peculiarly designed to run over the Internet. ASF files include audio, picture, slide shows, and synchronised events. These files should be good compressed and are delivered as a changeless flow of informations. The file size is non restricted but should be good compressed to fit assorted bandwidths. Advanced Stream Redirector Format ( ASX ) ASX files are metafiles that provide information about files used to depict multimedia content. These are field text files Windows Media Audio Format ( WMA ) WMA format is developed by Microsoft to manage all types of audio content. Similar to ASF arrange these files excessively should be good compressed and are delivered as a changeless flow of informations. The file size is non restricted but should be good compressed to fit assorted bandwidths. Windows Media Video Format ( WMV ) WMV format is developed by Microsoft to manage all types of picture content. Similar to ASF arrange these files excessively should be good compressed and are delivered as a changeless flow of informations. The file size is non restricted but should be good compressed to fit assorted bandwidths. Windows Media Audio Redirector Format ( WAX ) WAX files are similar to ASX files, but designed to depict audio files. Windows Media Player Format ( WMP ) WMP files and WMX are reserved file types for future usage by Windows. Multimedia elements like sound or picture besides have their ain file formats with different extensions.General-purpose FormatsMatroska File Format:which aims to be an all-enclusive, unfastened multimedia container format. Acorn Replay File Format:Acorn Replay ( RPL ) file format used on RISC OS machines. The format is frequently seen on Eidos games, but is designed as a all-purpose format.Self cheque 7.31.
